Mind-Body Physiotherapy & Chronic Pain

Camara Care’s interest in mind-body physiotherapy is informed by an earlier research proposal exploring body awareness enhancement therapies used alongside conventional physiotherapy for people living with chronic pain.

The proposal considered the relationship between breathing, movement, massage, awareness, pain, function and lived experience. It also recognised an important clinical caution: body awareness is not automatically helpful for everyone. If used poorly, it may encourage excessive symptom-monitoring, fear or over-focusing on bodily sensations.

This remains highly relevant to Camara Care.

A physiotherapy-led mind-body approach does not mean replacing clinical reasoning with vague wellness language. It means widening the clinical lens.

Pain, movement and function can be influenced by strength, mobility, sensation, balance, fatigue, fear, confidence, breath, attention, environment, previous injury, neurological change, culture and lived experience.

At Camara Care, the aim is not to ask people to obsess over every symptom. The aim is to help people notice without fear, move with guidance, understand their body, rebuild confidence and return to meaningful everyday life.

A Camara Care mind-body physiotherapy approach may include:

• Movement assessment

• Breathing and grounding strategies

• Graded movement

• Vestibular and sensory considerations

• Functional goal-setting

• Pain education

• Body awareness

• Strength and balance rehabilitation

• Confidence-building

• Self-management education

The clinical focus is simple: Notice without fear. Move with guidance. Build confidence through function.

A research-informed approach to care

This section brings together research reflections, clinical updates and physiotherapy-informed insight into areas that sit at the heart of Camara Care, including mind-body physiotherapy, body awareness, chronic pain, movement confidence, rehabilitation, healthy ageing and whole-person care.

The aim is not to replace individual assessment or treatment. The aim is to share thoughtful, evidence-informed perspectives that help people better understand their bodies, their movement and their recovery journey.

Camara Care believes that physiotherapy should be clinically grounded, human, reflective and responsive to the whole person.

Mind-Body Physiotherapy & Chronic Pain

My earlier research proposal explored body awareness enhancement therapies used alongside conventional physiotherapy for people living with chronic pain. This included the relationship between breathing, movement, awareness, pain, function and lived experience.

Research themes

Mind-Body Physiotherapy

Movement is not separate from the nervous system, confidence, breath, attention, environment or lived experience.

The Nervous System & Rehabilitation

Reflecting on how sensation, balance, fatigue, pain, threat and safety can influence movement and function.

Body Awareness & Chronic Pain

Exploring how body awareness can support movement and confidence without encouraging fear or excessive symptom-monitoring.

Movement Across Cultures

Exploring how culture, faith, rhythm, dance, prayer, traditional practices and daily movement shape function and participation.

Movement Confidence

Understanding how people rebuild trust in movement after pain, injury, dizziness, falls or neurological change.

Healthy Ageing & Prevention

Supporting strength, balance, mobility, independence, confidence and quality of life across the ageing process.

How this informs Camara Care

Notice

Understanding symptoms, movement, confidence, breath, balance, fatigue and function.

Regulate

Using grounding, education, pacing, breathing or positioning to reduce threat and prepare for movement.

Move

Using specific, meaningful, physiotherapy-led movement matched to the person’s needs.

Re-check

Reflecting on changes in pain, movement, confidence, ease, balance or function.

Progress

Building strength, balance, mobility, confidence and independence over time.
